I planned to write a lot of sh*te here but the reality is that there is a big black unshaven bastard known as the reality. When it  gives you a ninja style kick in your teeth, all your idealism goes out of the window.

You need strength and guidance to make the right and balanced decisions. Muntazir needs to wake up!

One more year went by like a flash. Its time to look back. Although looking back at a year is no comparison to looking forward but stil… I mean… for the sake of a blog post maybe? :D

January: At the beginning of 2008, I was jobless. Actually in a way I had opted to remain jobless. Maybe I was a little complacent and a little bit illusioned by the charms of studies in Europe. I had told my family that I am jobless because I need to prepare well for IELTS and a good band score will guarantee my admission.  I also told them that in order to prepare a good convincing application I need time and concentration. All that was rubbish of course. I was plainly complacent nothing else. Although the luxury of time that I enjoyed, enabled me to send a good piece of application. If you are wondering whats this all about  sending a convincing application. Well here is the thing, usually admissions in masters studies require a document called “Statement of Purpose” in which the applicant explains that what is his background, strenghts and ambitions, why a particular study course will suit him and why the university needs to give him admission. A well written SOP usually counts a lot in the decission. So I spent all January *preparing* for IELTS and *preparing some super persuasive SOPs*. In reality I spent about a week on preparing 6 different SOPs for 6 different programs. And I spent about one and a half day preparing for IELTS. But still, and by the grace of Almighty I scored 7.5 band score and later on also secured admission in 2 different programs in Sweden.

January was the middle point of the football season and Arsenal were cruising at that stage. The football they played was phenomenal and for a change the team had discovered some real steel that season. At the end of January Arsenal were sitting 5 points clear at the top of the league. It was however the last time when I saw Tomas Rosciky wear the red and white of Arsenal. He was substitued just after 9 minutes on 26th Jan in a FA Cup Home ties against Newcastle following a recurrence in a knee ligament injury. And he hasn’t recovered since.  I miss you Tomas.

February: Thanks to one of my friends from the university I got a part time job in Allama Iqbal Open university as an examiner of spring semester exams of BS in Computer Science. Basic requirement for the job was to be a graduate in computer science. The job was to read thoroughly and mark the papers on different computer science courses. Two other friends from university were also with me there. At first we tried to read every paper in detail so as to properly mark the papers but our supervisor was less than impressed. She said  “You are not here to read this crap, you are here to mark it. Not more than 5 minutes on one paper. We have hundreds of papers to mark and we only have three weeks and we are only 8 people”. So we tried to comply with it. We did our best not to mark incorrectly and not to do injustice with anyone. There were others who just went on ticking each page, sometimes when they were too busy talking to each other while ticking the pages, they would tick even the blank pages. If  handwriting was neat, they would give the student 70-75 marks. If it was normal they would give 60-65 marks. If it was poor, they would give 45-55 marks. No one tried to read the content. I remember I saw a paper in which handwriting was so poor it looked as if the guy had been trying writing with his foot rather than the hand, yet its content was good enough to earn him around 70 marks. And there were papers whose handwriting was so good it almost looked like a work of an artist yet the actual content was utter crap. They had stories of fairies, story of a prince who got lost on his travel to the jungle, a story of how ali baba is the best story ever, and the most typical of them all; account of a cricket match.  repeated over and over again in the answer of each question. There were some papers in which the candidates would beg the examiner to pass them so that and in return they would offer prayers for you for the rest of their lives. Me and my other two friends were ruthless about such papers however the senior lot of the examiners never really found out as they never bothered to read it properly. And almost all of them were teachers in colleges and universities. Its a real shame. After 3 weeks, I left the job. I was promised I would get my pay cheque  in less than 2 months yet I got that cheque some 8 months later in September.

It was a different experience that exposed me to some of the stuff I never had an experience of but still it is an experience of my life that I may never look back fondly to. And one that I am not too proud about.  I did my very best not to do injustice to any candidate. I hope I achieved it too.

The day I left that job, it was Saturday. Arsenal were due to play Birmingham City that evening, being five points clear at the top of the table with about 12 games to go. Things were looking all rosy and beautiful until the 3rd minute of the game when a studs-up lunge by Martin Taylor of Birmingham snapped Eduardo’s leg into two. The game ended as a 2-2 draw but he implications were much more far reaching than they looked at that time. Arsenal haven’t recovered since.

But now he is back!

March: Thanks to my good friend Junaid, I got a job Xyon Software Developers in F-11. I was working for a change now but the distance I was traveling each day was too much. It was hectic to the core yet I was convinced at that time that it was worth it. Office environment was ok and I was happy to be working.

It was also the time when league title started slipping away from Arsenal’s hands, a string of draws in March meant we were no longer the table toppers and Man United crept in from behind to take the top spot. Still there was one remarkable game which I wont forget in a hurry and that was a 2-0 win against the defending Champions AC Milan at their home ground San Siro. First English team to win their in a century. It was a remarkable performance. We are indeed the legend killers.

April: This was the month when I first appeared for an interview for my current job.

More to follow soon..

Dutch Tales… December 1, 2008

It seems like many years ago when Arsene’s Invincibles were going from strength to strenght. February 2004 to be exact. Arsenal came from a goal down to win 2-1 against  Chesea at Stomford Bridge. It proved to be a decisive nail in the coffin of Blues’ title hopes that season. Arsenal went on to win the league while remaining unbeaten throughout the season. Moment of the game came when an inch perfect, sublimely weighted ball slid through from the outside of the boot of the Dutch master Dennis “the iceman” Bergkamp found Patrick Vieira. Such was the quality and timing of the pass that Patrick did not even had to take a touch to control it. All he had to do was to finish it, and finish it he did. What made the goal so special was not only that genius through ball, but also the way Arsenal carved open the mean Chelsea defense. A diagnol run by Henry dragged Terry with him, another diagnol run by Pires dragged Gallas with him creating a big gap in the center of Chelsea defense for Patrick to run into from the heart of midfield. Truly classic Arsenal goal and I’ll never fcescvpchelseaorget that. Then moments later, from a corner Edu made it 2-1 and we celebrated a huge victory.

Then came the lull. A period of more than 4 and a half years. Arsenal never managed to win at Stamford Bridge. Sometimes it was lack of the physical bottle, sometimes it was poor refereeing and sometimes it was just Didier Drogba.  Chelsea never lost at Stamford Bridge, and it started getting regarded as a fortress. “Stamford bridge is a bridge too far”, thought the visiting teams. They went on to an 86-games unbeaten run at the bridge un till Liverpool beat them this October. Then this Sunday Arsenal came to Stamford Bridge knowing that a defeat will be a decisive nail in their own coffin of title hopes. It was a team whose entire midfield had no one older than 21. Eldest of them also being the captain. And on the other hand Chelsea had Lampard and Ballack and Deco, to speak of few. “On paper it is no match” said the pundits and experts. Betting companies offered insane rates for Arsenal to win as they never thought it would happen. But, there is always a but.  Never discount an Arsene Wenger side. If one thing the lads gave on the pitch, it was their heart. A solid, efficient and truly professional performance, playing football with grit determination and confidence. A bunch of players who cost less than 40m to assemble undid the mighty rich, insanely over-paid bunch of ’superstar’ Chelsea players who took more than 200m to assemble. Chesea 1-2 ArsenalArsenal went behind via an own goal by Djourou, something he wasn’t really able to do anything about, wasn’t his fault either. Then we came back. I love the Dutch maestro, Robin Van Persie. His two quick goals made sure we earned a historic victory at the bridge. Some say it was a lucky first goal because it was offside, well I agree that it was but if you look at past 4 years and see how many times Drogba scored offside goals for Chelsea against us. Hell, in 05-06 season this same Robin was miles onside yet linesman gave him offside. A goal that could have won us the game never stood. So in a sense, what goes around, comes around. Suck it Chavs, and get a life!

I know we may not win the league. I know this is one of those typical roller-coaster season but what the hell, I love it right now. I really do.

And Oh dear Arsenal, everyday I love you more!

The Bleak Midwinter November 25, 2008

The Bleak Midwinter

In the bleak midwinter, Gallas did make moan
Arsene stood hard as Iron, the red card was shown
Points had fallen, points on points, points oh no
In the bleak midwinter, not so long ago

Arsene, heaven can’t hold him, nor earth sustain;
Blues and reds shall flee away when he comes to reign;
In the bleak midwinter, the Emirates sufficed
The many injured players, sliced and diced.

Fabregas and VP will be gathered there,
Hopefullness and willpower throng the air
The press a crumpled paper in the bin
The end of gooner despair.

What can I give them, poor as I am ?
If I were a fan, I would bring a cheer;
If I were a wise man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give them; give my heart.

Cesc – El Capitán November 25, 2008

It was boiling since that dark day at St. Andrews in February 2008. Eventually it had to happen. Its still not too late. Its Taxi for William Gallas. And its Cesc, the new captain of Arsenal FC. I was just 2-3 years old when Tony Adams was given the Armband in almost exactly the same age as Cesc’s . And when I mention Tony Adams, then its no need to type the words like the “Arsenal Legend” or “Mr. Arsenal”. I hope Cesc follows his path. Apart from his exceptional playing talent that would make him one of the greatest of the game, I believe he has the right mental and personal attitude to be one of the greatest Arsenal captains of all time. el-capitan

This is from RedAction:

Francesc Fàbregas Soler joined Arsenal as a youth player on 11th September 2003 after being monitored by Francis Cagigao and Steve Rowley. In five years, we’ve seen him change from the mulleted, PlayStation-obsessed house mate of Philippe Senderos to our most important midfielder and the European championship-winning captain of Arsenal Football Club. An accolade most befitting the young man after five years of unwavering commitment to the club we all love.

Cesc - the new skipper It’s an armband worn in recent years by an ex-England captain and subsequently by three French medal-ridden stars. He’s in fantastic company and has achieved more than his predecessors did at the same age. But is he the right man for the job? We’d say emphatically YES and here’s a few reasons why.

From his first interviews with the notoriously ruthless English press, it was clear this was a young man with a shrewd head on his shoulders. His remarkable candour, though always composed and diplomatic, meant he always gave journalists and fans good copy. His charisma was endearing and, like his other attributes, belied his age. Is it that much of a surprise Arséne Wenger has selected him to be a leader of men?

We’ve all seen the questions asked by the media every June regarding players’ futures. Arsenal fans have had to endure endless summers of seeing their players dish out ambiguous answers and subsequently head for the nearest ice-cream/five grand extra/two year contract before their tans have started to fade! Cesc, however, has always been unequivocal when fielding such sheparding questions leaving the red tops to resort to Plan B for sensationalism. And we love him for that!

His footballing talent has been heralded globally for four years now and with good reason. By his own high standards, he hasn’t had the best start to a season but then he’s had absolutely no football break since summer 2007. Add to this, the need for a defensive midfielder to allow him free reign to pull strings and play to his strengths and we all know it’s just a matter of time before he’s back to 100%.gun__1228122470_chelsea_fabregas

It’s an exciting change for the fans and the players at a time when we’ve all been hurting. A time when we need someone to step to the plate and lead this team. Demand 100% for 95 minutes. Be that shoulder to lean on for all the players at the club and to show everybody what you can make of yourself at Arsenal Football Club!

We’re looking forward to his first programme notes ahead of today’s game. In the meantime, we’ll leave you with some quotes.

I don’t like it when people say, ‘You are the new Patrick’. No I’m not. I’m Cesc Fabregas

Arsenal came for me, but at Barcelona I was just one of many

I played four games at the beginning of the season and said to myself, ‘Okay, that’s great’. To get any more seemed too much to hope for. But then the manager kept me in the team and I said, ‘This is not possible!’ I’ve never seen this before. It’s like, in England, you’re dreaming as a young player. In Barcelona, even if you’re playing well, they sign someone older

I’m never scared. If you are, you can’t play this game

My debut was a dream come true, it was wonderful. I felt really comfortable surrounded by all these great players

If you have everything you’ll be the best and I want to be the best. So I’ll have to win everything. I’d also like to pass my driving test

When I scored my first goal, I went home and celebrated by drinking a Coca-Cola and eating a Kinder Egg
