What goes around, comes around November 16, 2008

And I am sad again. Well, don’t really know what to say, last night was another one of those sleepless , food-less nights. They lost to Aston Villa at home 0-2.

Arsenal 0-2 Aston Villa

Its now more defeats than the whole of last season and its still only November. As I said before its going to be a long long season for us. If there was any time to  be strongly behind the team and  support them, its now. My mantra remains as fresh as ever. We win together and we loose together.

Sometimes I feel when I go a little overboard with my happiness about something, fate slaps me hard on my face the immediate next time. As you can see in the previous post, I celebrated the famous Arsenal win over Man Utd in quite an enthusiastic manner. Then this midweek, Arsenal’s ‘kids’, the reserve team which comprises of almost all teenagers (average age 18.7 years), beat a Premier League side 3-0 in a scintillating display of technical football. A result which the opposing manager termed as “we got our back sides kicked today”. It was a phenomenal result. A result that couldn’t stop me from keeping my feet on the ground. Funnily enough, Assistant coach of one of Arsenal’s rivals Chelsea,  who are known for spending insane amounts of money on bringing in top quality players, made some disrespectful comments about Arsenal regarding their policy for that competition in which a day later Arsenal’s kids won 3-0. Gist of his statements was that Arsenal disrespect the competition by playing teenagers. It shows that they do not want to win it but we (Chelsea) on the other had will never disrespect it. We will always play  our strongest side and  the top players because we want to win it big time, our youth players will only be on the substitutes bench. And funnily enough, just two days later Chelsea lost to a lower division side and crashed out of the competition. Starting line up of Chelsea that night cost around 200 million pounds of transfer fees to assemble. Moreover One of Chelsea’s top strikers Didier Drogba is facing am FA and Police probe after he threw some coins at opposition fans and gave them a middle finger salute during the match. It was impossible not to laugh at Chelsea. I taunted all my Chelsea supporting friends because Chelsea had looked most stupid at that time. I even sent my Chelsea supporting friends an email which contained a hypothetical conversation obetween Chelsea manager Louis Philipe Scolari and Assistant Coach Ray Wilkins (listen below, and a word of advice don’t listen if you are a sophisticated person, some of the words used there might not be of your liking)

They say what goes around, comes around, I laughed at Chelsea and my friends who support chelsea, I taunted my man united supporting friends and I get the slap straight back at my face by getting humiliated last night. Maybe its just a coincidence, maybe its a lesson for my arrogance, I don’t know. Maybe I will try to be a little more humble the next time I am happy.

Elsewhere, we had a few guests staying at our place on the weekend. I recently started using skype because it gives great voice quality when talking to relatives in Norway. Unlike Yahoo, one or two random people that I found on skype were quite sensible in the way they talked. The other night me, Waqar and Naveed did voice conference on skype and it was awesome. It had been a long time since we had talked in our univ. days style. Long may it continue.

And I think I might be trying my luck for Europe again this year. But matters seem to be more complicated than last year. Lets see how it goes this time.

Till next time..

Saturday, November 08, 2008. An estimated 800,000,000 households world over saw injury-ravaged Arsenal gun down Manchester United 2-1 at the Emirates in an epic finale that will go down into the Premier league archives as an all time classic.

It was fantasy football. Playground stuff. You attack, we attack. Every second was pulsating. It was a game for those who love football.

It was the most nervous, exciting and heart pounding 90 minutes I have ever experienced. I was literally at the edge of my seat, my hands tightly clinched and my toes curling with ever increasing excitement. After the game I consumed a good liter of water. It was amazing.

Thank you Arsenal!

Flaw in Mathematics? November 3, 2008

Now this is quite strange. One of my father’s teachers who has come here to stay with us for a few days told me this. Click on the image below to enlarge it and see for yourself. Apparently there is no violation of any mathematical rule in this elaboration still we get a really absurd thing in the end. If you happen to be a mathematician or you know what the real catch is then please let me know. Is this really a flaw in  mathematics or is it just a mistake.

November 01, 2008. Ricardo Fuller and Seyi Olofinjana both scored after long throw-ins by Rory Delap as Arsenal capitulated and also had Robin van Persie sent off. Stoke 2-1 Arsenal. Worse was to come on a miserable day for us when Van Persie, on the pitch for only 12 minutes, was dismissed after needlessly barging into Sorensen. And boss Arsene Wenger could also be without three other first-teamers in the coming weeks because of injuries. Walcott was stretchered off with a shoulder problem, while Adebayor and Bacary Sagna also left the field with knocks.

3 days before it was Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham. Once again Arsenal were guilty of their familiar crime of over-elaboration and missing chances, leaving the door open for Spurs to rescue a point from a game that looked lost.

In the words of Arseblogger, It feels like a fish out of water. I guess everyone is still hurting about yesterday’s shambles at Stoke. I wondered, in the cold light of day, how I was going to feel writing this blog. Angry? Frustrated? Bitter? I have to say the resounding emotion this morning is just one of sadness. I am sad. Sad that an Arsenal team put in such a spineless and craven performance when they should have been pumped up and ready to make up for the Sp*rs game. Sad that we’ve dropped more points against a team we should, with all due respect, beat quite comfortably. Sad that the weaknesses we all saw in our squad have come back to haunt us and sad that we find ourselves in a position where we’re so rightly critical of our players. I am sad that I look at this team and think ‘We’re just not very good’.

Mostly though I’m sad about Arsene. Ultimately what happens on the pitch is down to him and at the moment he’s paying the price for making crazy decisions, both in the summer and recently.

We have now lost as many games in the league as whole of last year and its only November. Where we go from here is anybody’s guess. We don’t have too much time to feel sorry for ourselves though. There’s Champions League midweek against Fenerbache then we play United at home on Saturday morning.

I suspect more sadness is on the way. Oh Arsene how many more sleepless nights you plan to give me this season. It certainly looks as if its going to be a very long season for us.

Still, we win together and we loose together. Arsenal till I die.

End of an era – I go top of the stack November 1, 2008

October 11, 2008. My sister’s wedding. It was hectic to the core. But it was worth it.

Uncle Ali Jan is a legend, so is Javed sahab. Special thanks to my cousins Abid and Musaver. They make me feel I have two brothers, and two good ones at that. Special thanks to Junaid Waqar and most of all Naveed for their arrival and the generous gifts. Arrangements went perfect and the event was unanimously talked about as a big flawless success by all and sundry. A few family guests were a real turn off. Biryani was great and a lot of it was left behind. I kept eating it for next 2-3 days until there was nothing left. I did not attend Walima because lots of things at home needed to be wrapped up. Someone had to stay home.

Now that eldest of us siblings is done, I go to top of the stack. I think they are 3. There are indications of a 3-girls shortlist for me lined up by my parents. I have absolutely no idea about any one of them and I am not too keenly interested to know about them either. And frankly at this point in time this the last thing I am worried about. My life already rocks, and there is a lot of stuff I need to do before I make this inevitable mistake of getting married. But whenever I do, and it might sound arrogant but I am going to interview her to fathom the deepest core of her brain so that I pretty much have the idea of what sort of person I am bringing into my life and what sort of ideas I will be having to live with for the rest of my life or , maybe, if I should even marry her at all? I am such an idealist. And of course I’ll owe her the vice versa. Sometimes I wonder if someone will accept me at all because some of my ideas, according to people, are so unpractical. Example: “Women are not supposed to work and earn money. Husband shall earn money and wife shall raise the children properly, make them good valuable human beings and not watch Star Plus. That is how you build good nations” But its not the issue for like at least next 3-4 years.

Anyways enough of my idealistic blah blah ‘n all.

Around 18th October they found out that Norwegian Govt. had approved her visa application. The night before they left for Norway was quite memorable as it took them the whole night to properly pack all their stuff. Power breakdown did not help either. When we were at the airport to see them off, we were all quite sad, especially my parents. And its natural, it happens. On the airport on international departures terminal, there was a crying riot. People were seeing off their loved ones and crying like poor little girls. I shouldn’t have but deep down I was laughing at all those people. Why? I don’t know. I think I don’t exactly realize yet how it feels. Or maybe I am another one of those sad old rock-hearts.

Apparently they have nicely settled in there and are quite happy.

23 years and now we part, but you will always have our heart.

Black, white or any other race,
It doesn’t matter who you are,
Arsenal’s from every place,
In our eyes, we’re all the same.

It doesn’t matter if you’re old or young,
Follow different faiths – let’s join as one,
We are all the same when all’s said and done,
Come on everyone, be clever.

We all have hearts, there’s no doubt
Come on everybody – let’s all shout
We must all unite and play the game
The Arsenal way,
Arsenal for everyone!

Eid, BBQ Friends and wonders of getting drunk October 10, 2008

Nowadays such the the extent of my busy schedule that blogging seems a luxury I cannot afford to to take out time for. Its been a while since the last post. I hope i don’t miss to mention any mentionable experience s since the last post. So here I go.

Ramazan had been hard and my health had degraded to a little extent, at least in the eyes of my mother . After 3 weeks into Ramazan, I couldn’t wait to see the end of it, it sounds rather sacrilegious I know and I shouldn’t be saying this as Ramazan is the month of blessings and all that but that is what it is and that is how I felt.  I prayed for Ramazan to be of 29 days rather than 30 and that is what I got in the end albeit belatedly and with a certain element of controversy. There were mixed reports throughout the country regarding the sighting of the new crescent. Some said it was sighted, some denied it. Very late into the night, around 11 PM they officially declared that it was sighted and that it was the Eid next day. Thank Goodness for that.

A lot of people were not happy on the chand raat. Many thought it was going to be another roza next day and me and my friends were cursing these Moon Sighting committee members for this. Our tenants on the ground floor waited until 11 in the night before leaving for Lahore. Even my mother did not get to know about the eid next day as she went to sleep around 10 (an hour before the next day’s Eid was announced) In the morning she prepared Sehri for all of us as she thought it was another roza. When we told that It was Eid day today in the morning, she too rightfully cursed the moon committee members. My chand raat however was special. It was a special European Night as Arsenal produced a sumptuous display by beating FC Porto 4-0. Couldn’t have asked for a better Eidi.

I dont sleep much on a European Night like this and consequently I spent most of the Eid day sleeping.

On 2nd day of Eid two of my best friend Ashiq and Waqar came to see me. We had lunch together at my place and talked all sorts of stuff. Later they told me that they had planned a BBQ night and wanted me to join. So I went with them to Waqar’s place which is very near to the famous Rawal Lake. It took us  until midnight to prepare all the stuff for the event. We chose a spot on the Rawal lake bank for preparing the BBQ and all the while it was preparing we rocked the cool and romantic atmosphere by our moronic and stupid laughters, giggles and other misc. stupid things that we friends find cool to exercise. BBQ was awesome and later we danced on the music that was playing on Waqar’s deck.

The tempo and beats of this track brought the best out of many of us amateur dancers. If it was an animated movie the fish in the lake would surely have come out on top of the water surface and would dance alongside us just as stupidly as we did. It’s true :D

When we returned back to Waqar’s place it was 3 in the morning already. We were all on the bikes with all the BBQ stuff with us. i had the knife in my hand and some other things too. When we were about to enter Waqar’s house, suddenly a Police vehicle dashed into the street and stopped right besides us. An Officer came out and asked us that what are you doing here. We said we are just returning home. We all got a bit worried when an apparently little drunk constable emerged from back side of the vehicle and asked where is the house number xyz, they have reported gun firing. Waqar told them about that house which was just two houses away from Waqar’s. Police went to that house and started doing their stuff. It came out something like this. One of Waqar’s neighbors has a pet dog which like all other typical dogs, likes to bark. Now dog barking is a phenomenon that is never pleasing to the ears especially at night and especially when you are trying to sleep, not to mention when you are trying to sleep and you are drunk :D This is  exactly what happened with the next door neighbor of the dog-keepers. He somehow got drunk that night and was trying to sleep but the naughty little fellow that is the neighbors’ dog would not let him sleep. Nothing good should be expected from a drunk person and that is what happened. The drunk bloke took out his gun and opened fire on the poor dog. As he was drunk he could not properly hit the ‘bull’s eye’, he instead hit walls and floor of the neighbor’s house. They called the police and police was at it in a flash. Ironically and as mentioned above, one of the police constables was also drunk but he was managing himself fine. When the fire-opening bloke was pleading his innocence in front of police he was blabbering all sorts of funny and stupid stuff that you would normally expect from a drunk person. He was like:

I only opened fire on this $@#$@# doggie in my self defence…

I know he is a criminal… he barks all night long.. and his other fellows too but they are not owned so I cannot open fire on them

You are taking me to police station ..you dont know me..

My father built the entire Islamabad…

This is so not fair..

At first the police were real nice with him but he was behaving as if  he was the king of the world. SO Police had to show their traditional colors. The drunk constable was really pissed at him. He gave him a kick on his back side and hurled him into the backside of the vehicle and then in his own drunk accent mockingly imitated the fire-opening guy’s English phrases by saying:

this is wat … te .. wat is this.. !!

gaddi de ander ho…%#$#!%@

It was a nice climax to the an already exciting night. Although the night did not end there. At waqar’s place we arranged a multimedia projector and made a cinema like big screen on Waqar’s room’s wall and watched movies all night. I got back home around 2 in the afternoon next day. Later that evening Arsenal drew 1-1 with Sunderland thanks to a last gasp equalizing header by Cesc. I put this pic here because I like Cesc’s new typical Latino hairstyle and did I say it before, our away kit’s color scheme is awesome. At least i think so.

Finally I have got the phone number of my beloved friend Shadab. I’ll call him very soon.

More about the wedding ceremony of my sister in the following post. See you then.
