This Tuesday was one of the longest days of my work. I was at the office from 9:30 in the morning till 3:30 AM of Wednesday. That’s 18 hours. Until 6 PM it was a normal day at the office but things started getting abnormal afterwards. I was not asked, but told by the project manager at 6 PM “Muntazir you are going no where today. You will sit here with me and we will complete the proposals of these new projects for which we have to submit the bids early in the next morning. I will drop you home” With my job being just 2 months young; I did not have the balls to argue with the boss so I said a simple ok. My friend Junaid who is working here much longer than I have been, whispered in my ear saying, “you are in for a long night my friend” He was so right.
I thought maximum it would go would be 10 or at worst 11 in the night but then things started taking the turn for the worst. Minor mistakes and changes proposed by the CEO during the compilation of the proposals meant we completed it around 2 AM in the morning. Meanwhile our CEO (who still hasn’t left for USA yet but plans to in a week or two and who gave us that expansive lunch at pir sohawa) had brought dinner from some restaurant. It was chicken karrahi and chappal kebab and sabzi for himself as he is a strict vegetarian. When we finalized everything at 2 AM the all-important task of printing the proposal documents started. And after 30-40 prints, the toner of the printer went lame. It started printing pages out of its arsenal. I mean prints were not of proper quality with ink not uniformly spread over the page. At some places it was too light to be read. Surely they were not going to submit this type of output. They spent next hour and a half devising the plans to get the documents printed before 9 am in the morning.
All this while I was sitting on my pc downloading and watching some History channel torrents. By the way, for the sake of documentation of the truth, I must mention that while in all this hustle and bustle of project proposal presentation, it was surprising as well as disappointing to see something on the project manager’s computer screen. He knew when I saw it and his face went all red and his usual confident eye contact disappeared into the oblivion. I don’t know, I always had this sneaky feeling about him that he is into such stuff and finally I saw it with my very own eyes. What makes it worst is that the guy is married. Anyways his deeds and he is responsible for it. May God guide us all. At last we left the office at around 3:30 and it was nice to see the roads all empty. We literally flew across the city to my place. And that is how the long day ended. In fact a new day had started and I had no idea what surprises were in store for me for that day.
More about it in the next post. Till then…
